The world famous Nerd Nite lecture series is now in the 305! Nerd Nite is a monthly event held in more than 75 cities across the globe during which several folks give fun-yet-informative presentations across all disciplines – while the audience drinks along. It's like the Discovery Channel… with beer! This month's speakers and topics: 1) So You Think You Know About Criminal Justice 'Cause You Binge-Watch "Orange is the New Black?": You Don't Know Dick About Penology by Nick Petersen, Ph.D. / / / / / 2) They Call Me Ethnically Ambiguous: A Personal Narrative on the Social Construction of Race and Identity by Christian Lindo The rigidity of race thinking has defined American life from the earliest settlements to the most contemporary modern cities. More than a simple physical category, race has been used to continually, and wrongfully, explain things like social behavior, intellectual aptitude, and sexual proclivity. Though all contemporary research shows that the majority of our race thinking is socially constructed and not biologically defined, we continue to adhere to the disproved beliefs of prior generations. Let’s talk about why we do that and how it warps our understanding of the world today. Currently an ELA teacher with Broward County Public Schools. Christian has a Bachelor's degree in English and a Master's in Literature with a focus in Post-Colonial Theory. / / / / / 3) Spinoza’s Ethics: A Heretic’s Guide to Enlightenment and the Afterlife by Kris Arca Spinoza’s philosophy was once described as being “forged in hell” by “the Devil” himself. Yet, there are few philosophical systems of thought that are more humanistic than that of Baruch Spinoza (1632 – 1677). Spinoza’s philosophy has a singular goal: Enlightenment (with a capital “E”). That is, the goal of his philosophy is to show us that there is a way out from the misery and madness that follows from ignorance and superstition, and that this way is illuminated by embracing two distinct kinds of pleasure: the joy entailed in the rational pursuit of truth, and the joy that stems from helping others. In this brief presentation, I will endeavor to introduce the audience to some of the basic elements of Spinoza’s philosophy, with the aim of developing his understanding of enlightenment, as well as providing some insight as to what a secular understanding of the afterlife may entail—if there even is such a thing. According to those who know him best, Kris Arca is a mostly nice and somewhat tolerable person. He is a doctoral student in philosophy at the University of Leuven, Belgium, where he is pretending to write a dissertation on the relationship between memory and selfhood in the hermeneutic phenomenology of Paul Ricoeur. However, since he hasn’t a clue as to what any of those words even mean, Kris prefers to just talk about how much he loves Rush, especially their drummer, Neil Peart. Kris also managed to hoodwink the fine people at Miami Dade College into giving him a full-time job as a philosophy professor, where he gets paid to talk about how much he loves Rush, especially their drummer, Neil Peart.
